The Shasta Regional Transportation Agency (SRTA) is considering a proposal to develop a comprehensive safety action plan and safety campaign. This effort aims to improve safety for people and freight in the region, aligning with Goals 1 and 8 of the Regional Transportation Plan. The proposal suggests applying for a Sustainable Communities Planning Grant to fund this initiative. Over the past decade, there have been 2,037 crashes in the region, resulting in 71 fatalities and 2,668 injuries, 380 of them serious. The planning effort will analyze traffic safety data to identify high-risk areas and contributing factors for crashes. It will also develop a prioritized list of safety improvement projects and a safety education campaign. If the grant is awarded, work is expected to begin in fall 2027 and finish by June 2030. The board of directors is asked to provide input on the draft scope of work and direct staff to apply for the grant. If successful, SRTA will form a project advisory committee with regional partners to assist with the effort. A local match of 11.47 percent of the total project cost will be required, which can be provided through a combination of state and local planning funds.
